Cellulite

What is Cellulite?

Cellulite is a very common skin condition that causes lumpy, dimpled appearance on the thighs, hips, buttocks and abdomen. Cellulite affects women more than men due to the different fat, muscle, and connective tissue distribution. It is thought to affect 80 to 90 percent of women to varying degrees over their lifetime. Cellulite is not harmful.

Symptoms

Cellulite looks like dimpled or bumpy skin. It's sometimes described as having an orange peel texture. You can see mild cellulite only if you pinch your skin in an area where you have cellulite, such as your thighs. Cellulite that is more severe makes the skin appear rumpled and bumpy with areas of peaks and valleys. Cellulite is most common around the thighs and buttocks, but it can also be found on the breasts, lower abdomen and upper arms.

Causes

Leg cellulite or other affected areas may be caused by:

  • hormones

  • poor diet

  • weight gain

  • inactivity

  • pregnancy

  • genetic factors

Treatment

Shockwave (or soundwave) therapy is a non-invasive cellulite reduction treatment that targets and eliminates fat in the abdomen and thighs. It is painless, does not involve any surgery, and does not involve medications.

If getting rid of cellulite using other remedies, such as creams, has been ineffective, shockwave therapy works in such a different way that it could still help.
